Colonoscopy is a common screening test that is used to find ulcers, polyps, tumors or other abnormalities in your large intestine. It is the most widely used form of screening for colon cancer, which is the third most common cancer worldwide and second leading cause of cancer-related death. During the exam, our specialists will insert a video camera into your rectum and colon to look for signs of disease.
It is recommend that you have your first colonoscopy at age 50. The exam takes approximately 30 minutes, and we usually give you medicine to help you relax and sleep during the test. Your doctor will decide how often you may need a colonoscopy, but if your first test is clear and you do not show risk factors, it is typically recommended that you follow-up colonoscopy tests once every 10 years.
