Cardiologists may recommend an implantable cardiac defibrillator if you have sustained ventricular tachycardia or other conditions, including a previous heart attack or an inherited heart defect.

Overview

The implantable cardiac defibrillator is a small device that our surgeons will place in your chest or abdomen. If the device detects arrhythmia, it uses low-energy pulses to restore your normal heart rhythm. If your irregular heartbeat continues, the device will switch to a high-energy pulse lasting a fraction of a second to defibrillate your heart.
