A skin abscess, also called a boil or furuncle, is a pus-filled area of infection caused by bacteria. It is usually red, swollen and painful. It can form anywhere on the body, but most commonly around a hair follicle on the face, neck, breasts, armpit, groin and buttocks.
We will determine what has caused the abscess or cluster of abscesses to appear and may perform a small incision to drain the pus and relieve your pain. We may pack the area with sterile gauze to soak up any remaining fluid, and send a sample to the lab to determine the type of bacteria that caused the infection and the best type of antibiotic to treat it. Follow-up treatment may be required.
