Small glands just inside the anus can get clogged and become infected, causing an abscess. This infection may drain through a tunnel that forms under the skin called a fistula. We may recommend surgery to drain the abscess and close the fistula.
To drain your infection, an incision may be made in the skin near the anus. While this procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, you may need to be hospitalized if you have diabetes or are prone to more significant infections. More complex surgeries may be necessary if there is a danger of incontinence.
