Your doctor will recommend a treatment based on the nature and extent of your bowel obstruction. Some blockages can be resolved through initial procedures, including the use of tubes to remove air and liquid from the obstruction. A complete blockage may require surgery.
Your doctor may use expandable wire mesh tubes, or stents, and insert them into the area of the blockage with a thin, camera-mounted probe. Once in place, the stents force open the colon to relieve your blockage. In some cases, they may remove areas of your digestive tract damaged by the obstruction and connect the two healthy ends of your intestine.
