Your heartbeat may be irregular for a range of reasons, including atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias or cardiovascular conditions. After examining your heart, we may use cardioversion to restore a normal heartbeat.
In electric cardioversion, specialists will send low-energy shocks to your heart, either by placing an implantable cardioverter defibrillator inside your body or by sending pulses from outside your body through electrodes attached to your chest. The shocks essentially "reboot" your heart to a normal rhythm. Cardioversion can also be done using drugs delivered orally or through an IV.
