A pilonidal cyst forms when irritation from embedded hair or friction in the buttock cleft causes a chronic infection. The resulting abscess can be extremely painful.
Your surgeon may first drain your infected pilonidal cyst. If the sac returns, we may make incisions to remove it, and may fold surrounding tissue over the area to help it heal. The wound may be left open and bandaged to heal from the inside, or stitched closed. An open wound may heal more slowly, but your cyst will be less likely to recur.
