A rectal or anal abscess most often appears as a boil-like swelling near the anus, usually from an infection of small glands in the anus.
Your surgeon may perform an incision to drain the infection. The procedure may be done with local anesthesia or under deeper sedation, and may be performed with a second surgery if a fistula has developed. They may prescribe antibiotics to lessen the chance of another infection.
