Most ulcers occur in the first layer of the inner lining of the stomach or small intestine. Mild ulcers can often be treated with medication. However, more serious cases can cause a perforation that goes all the way through the stomach or duodenum. This should be considered a medical emergency that requires urgent treatment.
A perforated ulcer can cause severe blood loss and permanent stomach damage if untreated. A surgeon typically sews the hole closed to repair it. You also may need surgery if there is blockage in the passageway from the stomach to the intestines. Your doctor and our team will give you quality care throughout this process.
