An umbilical hernia occurs when intestines or gut tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle around the navel. It is common in children, but can occur in adults, where it is sometimes called a paraumbilical hernia.
Your doctor may recommend one of two procedures: open repair surgery, in which they make an incision for access to your hernia, or minimally invasive laparoscopy surgery. Hernia surgeries take about one hour to perform and generally do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. In both procedures, your healthcare team will use stitches or mesh to reinforce the abdomen wall.
