A ventral hernia develops at a thin spot in the abdominal muscle caused by previous abdominal surgery, childbirth, birth defect or physical stress. Treatment approach will depend on your condition, and may involve outpatient surgery to repair the damage and prevent complications.
Your doctor may recommend one of two procedures: open repair surgery, in which they make an incision for access to your hernia, or minimally invasive laparoscopy surgery. Hernia surgeries take about one hour to perform and generally do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. In either procedure, your healthcare team will use stitches or mesh to reinforce the abdomen wall.
