Esophageal Cancer is a relatively rare cancer, ranking 18th among cancers diagnosed in the U.S. The most recent data estimates 16,910 cases will be diagnosed in the U.S. for 2016. Though this represents only 1% of all cancers diagnosed, it accounts for 2.6% of all cancer deaths. Esophageal cancer is 3 X more likely to occur in men then in women, with the highest prevalence occurring in white and african american males. The most frequent age range of diagnosis is from 65-74 years old and the median age of diagnosis is 67 years old.
