Hernias occur when a portion of the abdomen’s inner wall protrudes outward. Hernia surgeries, whether they are open repair or minimally invasive, take about one hour and generally do not require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Overview

With open repair surgery, the surgical team pushes the intestine, fat or other organ back into position behind abdomen’s muscle wall. With minimally invasive surgery, the surgical team makes smaller incisions and inserts an endoscope, which has a small camera that projects a view of the area onto a video screen, and surgical instruments. In both procedures, they may use stitches or mesh to reinforce the abdomen’s wall.
